“BOYNTON BEACH BETRAYED: VARGAS & MCQUIRE TEAM UP WITH AN OUTSIDER TO PUSH SLUM HOUSING”

Dominick Vargas and Courtlandt McQuire are backing the push for Multitenant Housing Units (MTHUs), marketed as a modern twist on single-room occupancy housing (SROs). But don’t be fooled—these units are designed for nonfamily households earning under $35,000 a year and risk perpetuating subpar living conditions while doing nothing to address Boynton Beach’s real housing challenges.

“KURT JETTA, THE CONNECTICUT DEVELOPER, IS USING VARGAS & MCQUIRE TO RUIN OUR TOWN”

At the center of this controversy is Kurt Jetta, a wealthy developer from Connecticut with no ties to South Florida. Jetta has been propping up Vargas and McQuire to push his controversial housing agenda. These MTHUs would allow unrelated adults earning less than $35,000 a year to share homes in single-family neighborhoods, turning your peaceful street into a crowded and chaotic mess. Jetta has failed to force this agenda in Delray Beach and Lake Worth, where voters soundly rejected his candidates. Now, he’s targeting Boynton Beach. Why are Vargas and McQuire aligning themselves with an outsider intent on destroying our town?

PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORHOODS: STOP VARGAS, MCQUIRE, AND THEIR SPECIAL INTEREST BACKERS

Mayrene Watson, a Delray Beach native, supported a housing project aimed at providing affordable homes for local workers. However, commissioners raised safety concerns. Kurt Jetta, president of Jetta Investment Company, emphasized that the proposal included thorough vetting of landlords, property managers, and tenants, but expressed disappointment that these measures were not considered by the commissioners.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING FUELS OVERCROWDING, PROPERTY VALUE FEARS

The Delray Beach Commission is considering adding more affordable housing units modeled after single-room occupancy (SRO) setups—an idea championed by Dominick Vargas and Courtlandt McQuire in their push for Multitenant Housing Units (MTHUs). Nick Sanchez, a tenant in one such SRO, lives with nine other people in a single-family home, where each has their own small bedroom but shares just two bathrooms. Sanchez stores his cooking equipment and refrigerator in his bedroom, describing the setup as “like a small family.””

SHARED LIVING SPACES RAISE PRIVACY AND SANITATION CONCERNS

In Palm Beach County, despite focus on affordable housing, low-wage earners making $35,000 or less annually remain overlooked. While middle-income workers like teachers and firefighters receive attention, 26% of residents earn under $35,000. For non-family households, 41% earn less than $35,000, and 5 out of 6 renters spend over half their income on housing. With a studio apartment rent of $1,800 considered “fair,” those earning $15 per hour cannot afford basic housing.
